What is Fluconazole 150mg Capsule?

Fluconazole 150mg is a one-capsule oral treatment for vaginal thrush and candidal balanitis in adults. There are no applicators, no messy creams and no course to remember. You simply swallow one capsule with water, at any time of day, with or without food. It is a convenient choice if you would rather not use an internal pessary, or if creams have not suited you in the past.

The active ingredient is fluconazole, a triazole antifungal that works against Candida albicans, the yeast behind most cases of thrush. It stops the yeast from making ergosterol, a building block it needs for its cell membrane. Without it, the yeast cannot grow or spread, and your body clears the infection, easing the itching, stinging and thick white discharge that thrush causes.

Fluconazole 150mg is a prescription-only medicine licensed by the MHRA. It is supplied after a short online consultation reviewed by a UK-registered prescriber and dispensed by our GPhC-registered pharmacy, so you can get treatment discreetly without a GP appointment.

“One capsule is all you need, but it isn't instant. Most people notice the itching easing within a day or two and feel back to normal within a week. If this is your first bout of thrush, or you've had it more than twice in six months, let us know, as it's worth ruling out other causes.”

Who manufactures Fluconazole 150mg Capsules?

Fluconazole was developed by Pfizer scientists in Sandwich, Kent, and first launched in the UK under the brand name Diflucan in the late 1980s. Today, generic Fluconazole 150mg capsules are produced by MHRA-licensed manufacturers to the same strict quality standards, containing the same active ingredient in the same strength as the branded original. Fluconazole is on the World Health Organization's Model List of Essential Medicines and remains one of the most widely prescribed antifungal treatments in the UK.

What's inside the capsule?

Each capsule contains 150mg of fluconazole as the active ingredient. The remaining ingredients help form and protect the capsule and typically include lactose monohydrate, maize starch, colloidal silica, magnesium stearate and sodium lauryl sulfate, held in a gelatin shell coloured with titanium dioxide and approved colourings. The exact list depends on the manufacturer, so check the leaflet if you have an allergy or dietary requirement.

Storage

Keep the capsule in its original blister pack to protect it from moisture, and store it out of the sight and reach of children. Follow the temperature guidance printed on the carton, and do not use it after the expiry date shown on the pack.

How does Fluconazole 150mg work?

Fluconazole 150mg works in three key ways:

  • Blocking ergosterol production: Fluconazole blocks an enzyme the Candida yeast uses to make ergosterol, an essential part of its cell membrane. This stops the yeast from building healthy new cells.
  • Weakening the yeast: Without ergosterol, the cell membrane becomes leaky and unstable. The yeast can no longer grow or multiply, which gives your body's natural defences the chance to clear the infection.
  • Lasting from a single dose: Fluconazole is almost completely absorbed from the gut and reaches the vaginal tissue in effective amounts. With a half-life of around 30 hours, it stays active in the body for several days, which is why one capsule is enough.

Thrush is a common yeast infection, not a sexually transmitted infection. Candida normally lives harmlessly on the skin and in the vagina, but it can overgrow after antibiotics, during hormonal changes, with poorly controlled diabetes, or when the area stays warm and damp. Common signs include itching and soreness around the vagina, a thick white discharge that looks like cottage cheese with little or no smell, and stinging when peeing or during sex. In men, thrush can cause redness, irritation and a white discharge under the foreskin.

The Treatment Protocol

Step 1 Before your dose

Check Suitability

Read the patient information leaflet in the pack. Do not take fluconazole if you are pregnant, think you may be pregnant, or are allergic to fluconazole or other azole antifungals. Tell our prescriber about breastfeeding, liver, kidney or heart rhythm problems, lactose intolerance, or if you take warfarin, statins, diabetes tablets, phenytoin, rifampicin, ciclosporin or tacrolimus.

Step 2 Swallow whole

Take the Capsule

Swallow the capsule whole with a glass of water. You can take it at any time of day, with or without food. Do not open or chew the capsule. One capsule is the full treatment, so there is no need to take another the next day.

Step 3 First few days

Soothe the Itching

The capsule treats the infection from the inside, but it can take a day or two for itching to settle. An external antifungal cream applied around the vulva or to the penis can ease soreness in the meantime. Wash with plain water or an emollient instead of soap.

Step 4 Every day

Keep the Area Comfortable

Wear loose cotton underwear and avoid tight jeans, tights and leggings while you recover. Dry yourself gently after washing. Avoid perfumed soaps, shower gels, bubble baths and douches, as these upset the natural balance of the vagina and can bring thrush back.

Step 5 Until symptoms clear

Sex and Partners

It is best to avoid sex until your symptoms have cleared, as it can be uncomfortable and may slow healing. Thrush is not an STI, so your partner only needs treatment if they have symptoms too. Unlike some antifungal creams, the capsule will not weaken condoms or diaphragms.

Step 6 After 7 days

Check In if Not Better

Symptoms usually improve within 3 days and clear within a week. If they haven't, or thrush comes back within two months, contact our pharmacy team or your GP. Side effects may include headache, stomach pain, diarrhoea or feeling sick. Get urgent help for swelling, breathing difficulty, a severe rash or yellowing skin.

Recommended Dosage Guide

Fluconazole 150mg is a one-off dose. The same single capsule treats vaginal thrush in women and candidal balanitis in men. Do not take a second capsule for the same episode unless a prescriber tells you to.

Condition Dose Course / Duration
Vaginal thrush 150mg (1 capsule) Single dose: Swallow whole with water. Symptoms usually ease within 3 days.
Candidal balanitis (thrush in men) 150mg (1 capsule) Single dose: See a GP if there is no improvement within 7 days.
Recurrent thrush (4 or more episodes a year) Prescriber-led only Longer course: Needs a personalised treatment plan from your GP.
Pregnancy Not suitable Use a pessary or cream: Speak to your GP or midwife.
Under 16 or over 60 Medical advice only Speak to your GP: Thrush at these ages needs a doctor's assessment first.
Single Dose Protocol

Fluconazole 150mg is a single-dose treatment, so there is no course to keep up and no dose to miss. Never take an extra capsule because symptoms haven't cleared straight away. If too much is taken, speak to a doctor or go to A&E straight away and take the pack with you.
