What is Vermox?
Vermox 100mg Tablets are a worm treatment used to clear common intestinal worm infections in adults and children over 2 years old. Each pack contains 6 tablets, enough for a full three-day course for roundworm, whipworm or hookworm, or a single threadworm (pinworm) dose with a follow-up tablet two weeks later.
The active ingredient in Vermox is mebendazole, a broad-spectrum anthelmintic from the benzimidazole family. It works by stopping worms from absorbing glucose, the sugar they need for energy. Without it, the worms weaken and die, and are then passed out of the body in your stool. This relieves symptoms such as an itchy bottom at night.

How does Vermox work?
Vermox tablets work in three key ways:
- Blocking glucose uptake: Mebendazole stops adult worms and their larvae from absorbing glucose in your gut. This cuts off their main source of energy and stops them from feeding.
- Draining energy stores: Without glucose, the worms use up their stored glycogen and can no longer produce ATP, the fuel their cells need to move, survive and reproduce.
- Clearing the infection: The weakened worms die and pass naturally in your stool. Because very little mebendazole is absorbed, the treatment stays concentrated in the gut, where it’s needed.
Vermox kills worms but not their eggs. Threadworms lay eggs around the bottom at night, causing itching and letting eggs transfer to fingers, bedding and surfaces. Good hygiene alongside treatment breaks this cycle and stops reinfection. Common signs of threadworm include intense itching around the bottom, especially at night, disturbed sleep, irritability, and tiny white thread-like worms in stools.

Check Suitability
Read the patient information leaflet in the pack. Do not take Vermox if you are pregnant, think you may be pregnant, or are allergic to mebendazole or any ingredient. Tell our pharmacist if you are breastfeeding, have liver problems, or take metronidazole or cimetidine.
Take Your Tablet
Chew the tablet or swallow it whole, with or without food. You don’t need a laxative or a special diet. For young children, crush the tablet and always supervise them. Children who can’t swallow tablets may find Vermox Oral Suspension easier.
Treat the Family
Threadworms spread easily, so everyone in your home should usually be treated at the same time, even without symptoms. Pregnant or breastfeeding women and children under 2 should speak to a pharmacist or GP first. This is the most effective way to stop worms passing back and forth between family members.
Follow Strict Hygiene
Wash hands and scrub under nails before eating, after using the toilet and after changing nappies. Keep nails short, avoid nail-biting and thumb-sucking, and shower every morning to wash away eggs laid overnight.
Clean Your Home
Wash all bedding, nightwear, towels and soft toys on a hot wash. Vacuum and damp-dust the house, especially bedrooms, and clean bathroom and kitchen surfaces. Don’t shake bedding or clothes, as this can spread eggs. Keep toothbrushes in a closed cupboard and rinse them well before use.
Repeat if Needed
For threadworm, take a second tablet two weeks later if reinfection is suspected. If symptoms continue or you see worms again, contact our pharmacy team or your GP for advice. Side effects are uncommon but may include stomach pain, diarrhoea, wind or feeling sick.

If you forget to take a Vermox tablet, take it as soon as you remember, then carry on with the rest of your course as normal. Do not take a double dose to make up for a forgotten tablet. If you take too many, speak to a doctor or go to A&E straight away.
