What is Mounjaro?
Mounjaro (tirzepatide) is a once-weekly self-injection designed to support weight loss and help with weight management. It works by reducing cravings, lowering your appetite, and helping you feel fuller for longer, even when you’re eating less.
The main ingredient in Mounjaro injections is tirzepatide. It works on two natural hormones in the body: GLP-1 (glucagon-like peptide-1) and GIP (glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide). Most weight loss injections only work on GLP-1, but Mounjaro is different because it works on both. This makes it a “dual agonist” treatment, and research shows it can lead to more weight loss than other options.
Through multiple clinical trials, Mounjaro has been proven safe and effective for long-term use in the UK, and is only available on prescription through licensed providers like Chemist4U.
“Mounjaro works best when paired with lifestyle changes, like eating a balanced diet, staying active, and building healthy habits you can stick with. Combining these with your treatment plan gives you the best chance of seeing results and reaching your weight loss goals safely. At the end of the day, healthy habits support weight loss and help you maintain it for the long term.”
— Jason Murphy, Head Pharmacist

How does Mounjaro work?
Mounjaro injections works in three key ways:
- Reducing appetite: Mounjaro works on two hormone receptors (GLP-1 and GIP) to signal your brain that you’re full. This helps curb cravings, control portion sizes, and make following a weight loss plan easier.
- Slowing digestion: By slowing how quickly food leaves your stomach, Mounjaro keeps you feeling satisfied for longer, helping you avoid unnecessary snacking and stay on track with healthier eating habits.
- Regulating blood sugar: Mounjaro improves insulin response and helps stabilise blood sugar levels, reducing hunger spikes.
All of this helps you stay in a calorie deficit when following an appropriate diet, which is the key to effective and sustainable weight loss. A calorie deficit happens when you consume fewer calories than your body burns, encouraging your body to use stored fat for energy.
The Administration Protocol
Prepare and Inspect
Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water. Check the pen label to confirm it is Mounjaro and ensure it has not passed its expiration date. Inspect the liquid in the cartridge—it should be clear and colorless to slightly yellow. Do not use if frozen, cloudy, or contains particles.
Select and Clean Site
Choose an injection site from three approved areas: the abdomen (at least 2 inches away from the belly button), the front of the thighs, or the back of the upper arms (if administered by a caregiver). Clean the skin surface with an alcohol wipe and let it dry completely.
Attach the Needle
Pull off the outer paper tab of a new pen needle. Push the needle straight onto the pen and twist it firmly until tight. Pull off both the outer needle cap and the inner needle shield (keep the outer cap to safely remove the needle later).
Prime the Pen
Turn the dose knob until you see the priming symbol (a small drop icon). Hold the pen with the needle pointing straight up, then push and hold the injection button down completely. A small stream or drop of liquid should appear at the needle tip to confirm proper flow.
Set and Deliver Dose
Turn the dose knob until the indicator window matches your current prescribed strength (e.g., 2.5, 5, 7.5, 10, 12.5, or 15 mg). Insert the needle straight into your skin at a 90-degree angle. Push the injection button down completely until the indicator returns to "0", then hold it in place for 5 seconds to ensure full delivery.
Safe Disposal
Carefully place the outer needle cap back over the needle, untwist it to remove it from the pen, and discard the used needle immediately into an approved sharps disposal container. Replace the pen cap and return the pen to storage.
Standard Titration Schedule
To minimize gastrointestinal side effects and allow the body to adjust to the dual GLP-1 and GIP hormone receptor activity, Mounjaro utilizes a mandatory monthly titration schedule.
| Treatment Month | Weekly Dosage | Purpose / Clinical Phase |
|---|---|---|
| Month 1 | 2.5 mg | Initiation phase: Prepares body receptors; not intended for therapeutic weight management. |
| Month 2 | 5.0 mg | First maintenance phase: Active therapeutic dosage. |
| Month 3 | 7.5 mg | Titration step: Dose escalation based on individual glycemic/weight response. |
| Month 4 | 10.0 mg | Maintenance step: Increased metabolic stabilization. |
| Month 5 | 12.5 mg | Advanced step: Maximizing target receptor saturation. |
| Month 6+ | 15.0 mg | Maximum dosage: Highest approved weekly therapeutic concentration. |
If you miss a dose of Mounjaro, administer it as soon as possible within 4 days (96 hours) of the missed day. If more than 4 days have passed, skip the missed dose and resume your regular schedule on the next planned injection day. Never administer two doses within 3 days of each other.
