How does Vermox Oral Suspension work?
Vermox Oral Suspension works in three key ways:
- Blocking glucose uptake: Mebendazole stops adult worms and their larvae from absorbing glucose in the gut. This cuts off their main source of energy and stops them from feeding.
- Draining energy stores: Without glucose, the worms use up their stored glycogen and can no longer produce ATP, the fuel their cells need to move, survive and reproduce.
- Clearing the infection: The weakened worms die and pass naturally in the stool. Because very little mebendazole is absorbed, the treatment stays concentrated in the gut, where it’s needed.
Vermox kills worms but not their eggs. Threadworms lay eggs around the bottom at night, causing itching and letting eggs transfer to fingers, bedding and toys. Good hygiene alongside treatment breaks this cycle and stops reinfection. Common signs in children include itching around the bottom at night, disturbed sleep, irritability, and tiny white thread-like worms in stools.

Read the patient information leaflet in the pack. Do not use Vermox if you are pregnant, think you may be pregnant, or are allergic to mebendazole or any ingredient. Tell our pharmacist about breastfeeding, liver problems, sugar intolerance, or taking metronidazole or cimetidine.
Measure the Dose
Shake the bottle well before every dose. Pour the suspension into the 5ml dosing cup provided, filling it exactly to the 5ml line. Never use a kitchen spoon, as it won’t give an accurate dose. Always supervise children while they take it. Rinse the cup with water after each use.
Treat the Family
Threadworms spread easily, so everyone in your home should usually be treated at the same time, even without symptoms. Pregnant or breastfeeding women and children under 2 should speak to a pharmacist or GP first. Older family members may prefer Vermox Tablets.
Follow Strict Hygiene
Wash hands and scrub under nails before eating, after using the toilet and after changing nappies. Keep children’s nails short, discourage nail-biting and thumb-sucking, and bath or shower every morning to wash away eggs laid overnight.
Clean Your Home
Wash all bedding, nightwear, towels and soft toys on a hot wash. Vacuum and damp-dust the house, especially bedrooms, and clean bathroom and kitchen surfaces. Don’t shake bedding or clothes, as this can spread eggs. Rinse toothbrushes well and keep them in a closed cupboard.
Repeat if Needed
For threadworm, give a second 5ml dose two weeks later if reinfection is suspected. If symptoms continue or you see worms again, contact our pharmacy team or your GP. Side effects are uncommon but may include stomach pain, diarrhoea, wind or feeling sick.
